Setup vsftpd on Linux

Most vanilla installs of Linux don’t come with an FTP server. There’s a really easy way to remedy that when your server has internet access! Just install vsftpd!

First you install it:

yum install vsftpd

Then you edit the config file

cd /etc/vsftpd
vi vsftpd.conf

Then you change the root directory:

local_root=/ftp

Then you start the FTP server:

service vsftpd start

If you want it load automatically on bootup, you can add that too:

chkconfig vsftpd on

If you want to change the ports that passive FTP uses you’d edit these values in vsftpd.conf

pasv_min_port=1521
pasv_max_port=1521

If you want to change the default listening port for the FTP server you’d edit this value in vsftpd.conf

listen_port=1521
