20 Annoying Things CNN Article (Flying Tips)

I haven’t ranted in awhile, so here goes…

So, CNN just put out an article about the 20 most annoying things people do on planes (http://www.cnn.com/2013/11/22/travel/plane-annoying-things/index.html?hpt=hp_c2).  Since I’ve spent over 250 hours on planes so far this year, I feel like I should reply to some of those….especially the several examples I think/know are wrong!

I have my fair share of gripes about annoying topics when it comes to travel, but this article makes American travelers out to be ridiculously offended at the stupidest things!

  1. Abusing someone else’s possession in the overhead bin
    • Their example: Getting to your seat, putting your carry on AND your COAT in the overhead bin.
    • If you’ve flown AT ALL in the past 5 years, you know that overhead bin space is ALWAYS full of everyone’s huge luggage trying to avoid the fees.
    • Why on earth would you fold your coat up nicely and take up that space? THAT is annoying. Someone moving your coat to put their actual luggage isn’t!
  2. Taking ages to choose a movie
    • Their reasoning doesn’t exist… They just don’t want someone to take 30 minutes to decide.
    • Why are you staring at what they’re doing?  Can you not focus enough on your movie/book/conversation that someone picking a movie is annoying?!!
    • The ONLY way this could ever be annoying is if it were the person BEHIND you and they kept pushing the touch screen and basically poking the back of your head for 30 minutes! 🙂
  3. Compulsive leg shaking
    • This does get pretty annoying, but again…. Why are you focusing on someone else?  Get lost in your own business!  You never know the fears and phobias or life events that just took place in your neighbor’s life.  Give them the benefit of the doubt!
  4. Boarding before your group
    • This is terribly annoying, but I feel that if the gate agents were a little clearer and more forceful with how they began the boarding process, people wouldn’t do this.
  5. Babies crying
    • I have a friend who literally rages when this happens….. I don’t understand it myself.  I just throw the noise canceling headphones on and turn the music up louder.  It’s not the baby’s fault and it isn’t the parents’ fault…. It’s a natural noise and part of life!
  6. Getting Huffy When a Neighbor Leaves Their Seat
    • I’d say they have a right to get a little huffy if the neighbor is constantly getting up.  But once or twice during a few hour flight is fine.
    • Again… it’s part of life! If you don’t want to be bothered by neighbors getting up, pick a window seat!
  7. Yapping On The Cell Phone
    • These people are calling their loved ones to let them know when they can be picked up.  Or they’re businessmen conducting important business.  Or they are….. well whatever they’re doing…. let them do it.
    • It’s important enough for them to immediately call, why do you care!?
  8. Smelly Food
    • OK… This IS annoying.  The Lenny’s in Memphis, TN airport has some of the grossest vinegary smelling food on the planet and EVERYONE brings it on…. ick!
  9. Loud Talking
    • Have you been on planes lately?  The aluminum is so thin these days to cut on gas prices, that you can basically hear the engine in your soul….You have to talk pretty loudly just to have a conversation with someone.
    • If that bothers you, GET SOME HEADPHONES and stop being so nosey!
  10. Establishing Armrest Hegemony
    • This isn’t annoying…. There is an age old rule that EVERYONE uses here…. First come, first serve..  If you get the armrest first, its yours.  If you don’t.
    • Quit complaining and be quicker next time!
  11. Poaching the Empty Middle Seat
    • First off…. They used a picture of a MILITARY man resting his legs on the empty middle seat.  I’m sorry this person has been working their butt off to make sure you can even be ON the plane in the first place.
    • Second off….. Again, this is the age old first come first serve rule.
  12. Coughing/Sneezing/Germ Sharing
    • Are people just not supposed to travel at all when they may be a little under the weather?  Get over yourself, they’re just germs.
    • That said, if you ARE sick, just make sure you cover yourself when you’re coughing and sneezing and blowing your nose.  Just be courteous.
  13. Playing Games Without the Sound Off
    • This is kind of rude.  These days everyone has headphones…. Use them!
  14. Rolling Huge Suitcases Up The Aisle
    • More power to you if you can get a huge suitcase onto a plane these days.  The gate agents are methodical about making sure it “fits in the bin”.
  15. People Behind You Trying to Disembark First
    • With all of the delays every airline has, someone is ALWAYS running late and about to miss their flight.  Stop being the center of the universe for three seconds and let them off first.  It’s probably more important than your Jamba Juice at gate C12.
  16. Neglecting Personal Hygiene
    • This is annoying.  You know you’re going to be in close proximity with hundreds of people.  Take care of yourself.
  17. Bare Feet
    • I’m on the edge for this one…. I know you’re going to Cancun and are in party mode…. But also your feet are pretty dirty.
    • Keep them on the floor and we’re cool.  But the second you put them on the wall or recline them on the seat in front of you, you’ve crossed into the gross category.
  18. Hogging the Toilet
    • Are people really mad that some people take longer in the bathroom!?!  Get there first if you have to go THAT bad!
  19. Reclining the Seat
    • The seats are made to recline, so go for it.
    • The ONLY problem I have are with the FAST recliners.  Those that have no concern for those behind them.
    • It’s your seat, you can do whatever you want with it, but just come back slowly so you don’t spill my drink, crush my legs, or break my iPad.
  20. Kicking/Shoving/Bumping The Back of the Seat
    • This is pretty annoying.

So, of the 20 “annoying” things about people on planes, really only 6 of them are annoying. The rest just make you look like a selfish, entitled jerk.

In the end, just be courteous to people and don’t expect everyone to know what you want all of the time.  Speak up, quit being so selfish, and have some common sense and common courtesy and your flight will be far less annoying than “normal”.
